Unfortunately I was unable to execute all the things I wanted to achieve. But that digital work, My Digitalization, wants to be a personal introspective of my feeling through the technology, maybe that is why i choose the touch, probably the sense i love the most, more than the view itself. If it was to happen again, I think the online application will have been the best way to represent my vision and concretise it as a more official and operational entity. Right now it feels like a draft, I have the main frame but only that, I should have explored more around the frame.
The future for the project will be to review its roots, I really think returning to the application and finishing it will push the project of digitalisation forward. One another avenu will be with a text of a comic book to really expand that fiction of leaving your body and the hard choice you need to take to get to this connected world without filter.
For the project, I think each piece can work individually and can have its self identity. I will probably try to polish them and use it only as an experience without meaning, simply because I like the feel of it, the playground that procure when I play with it.
That's it I think, I am out, waiting to play cyberpunk 2077 without putting anything cyborg on my character. Peace out, Cyborg teacher, it is here that the cyborg guild dismember I presume.
Inspiration?
The work shared by Johanna showed shadow through fabric and also an art installation from an unknown artist that was using plaster and doing drywall sculpture of hand face and body like they were getting drawn into the wall. I was also inspired by the artist Daniel Rozin who created portraits with interactive material that adjust and create form. Basically I wanted to reverse his process in a simpler way.
Why?
Wanted to use a simple medium, like the stretchable fabric and the touch to create a connection between people and a gate to connect to this digital reality. I wanted to create a path to make people really experience and understand what they are gonna lose for going through the process of the digital cyborg. The concept wanted the person to go from a fully analog digital, intimate to go to a more open colored warm experience where you have more control and interact with a projection. The last one was a wall where degenerative video going back to basic pixel form was projected. You can actually walk behind the walk and interact with the wall, but only others see the result, losing the sense of perception of your touch.
Why not?
At the end, I didn’t connect to that project, it was more for the sick of producing material than really creating something that expresses my vision of the digital cyborg, the liberation of the body.
Inspiration?
Was inspired by the new way to make sound appear, with 360 sound ambiance, ASMR. I wanted to, in the same way, make the distant touch feelable. Without even being in contact to feel the warm of it. Create a language with a sense where we can communicate emotion and feeling without using words.
Why?
I wanted to experience a new form of language, a new way to see a sense like touching sound, seeing touch, ear smell. The principle was really interesting to me, we see cyborg as a complete replacement but what if it was amplifying a sense, adding new “texture” and subtlety to it. Maybe it’s just a fantasy, a phantasm to be able to literally touch sound.
Why not?
I think it could have worked, but I really wanted to focus on the sense of touch and transform it in a way that it felt like a ascension, a rite of passage.
Inspiration?
The sensuality that can be found in game, movies and series abording the cyberpunk subject where we can find a lot of the cyborg genre. Also the restaurant is called ‘Onoir' where you eat in a restaurant without any light led by blind people and where you don’t see your food.
Why?
There I began to explore the concept of the touch, I wanted something where people can connect touching with their vision altered. Create une connectivity with music (choose by every participant), painting, a plant to break the glass but also to serve as a living sculpture, in a relaxing environment to make everyone comfortable. This wants to be a right of passable, a transition to something greater, building this structure together, an abstraction that represents a whole.
Why not?
It was really just a transition to a subject I wanted to explore in its pure form, personally the experience itself seems to be a success with the comment of every participant, we could have seen the change, the connection created after. But I wanted to push the subject further, and there is where I felt in hell.
Inspiration?
Some movies and series like Tron, Westword (when the android leave their body to go to a safe place, server), Her, Lucy and many others. The connection between multiple without any filter, leaving your body to access a virtual space.
Why?
It's more a conceptual idea, where people are invited to create a persona and merge with others to create an online sculpture. The main goal was to create a collective art piece from an abstract persona generated by the machine, a way to connect, be interconnected, be unity and plural.
Why not?
The suggestion and input I receive push me more into an analog way, personally I should have continued and program the whole application seeing it afterward. Rethinking about it will express pretty well my view on the subject and will fit the idea of being accessible and create that feeling of merging with others into one entity. The idea could be expanded in the real world as well with 3D print the result of the collective personna and sculpture. This is the point where things turn bad!
Inspiration?
Way to get away from the net of facial recognition? From changing your hair, using makeup or a face projection, many ways exist to fade in without being recognized. Actually there are a lot of movies, series and real life situations like in China that raise the importance of our anonymity in the world.
Why?
My interest about the digitalisation of our space and the cyborg subject meet to create a human that will use technologies and analog tools to be invisible and walk freely without fear of being recognized or followed. The importance of being anonymous and protecting our intimacy becoming more and more important with the government control was what pushed me to go that way, and to give an option strong enough to live without being tagged by an AI.
Why not?
A lot of projects exist already in many different iterations. It was more an exploration to bring the subject of cyborg and digitalisation together.
Inspiration?
The Mad Max movie and the swamp scene where we see people fully adapted to the environment.
Why?
The project wanted to be a hybrid between the cyborg of the Process class and Perception that is about mapping and unmapping. If it was to be done again I would probably have taken that idea and push it through the end.
Why not?
Unfortunately, at the time, I didn’t know the available resources and was not sure about the feasibility of the project. I found myself a bit lost in this new environment, that is Iceland and the available tools and material available for me. Also the 1 week process pushed me away from that idea, since I was so dependent on my surroundings.
Inspiration?
The painstation was mainly the inspiration for this concept, a machine that you play pong and when you lose you get a punishment between heat, slap and electroshock.
Why?
The function was to make you realise every time you do an action to make you think if that action is really important to you. From using a phone, to eating, the tool will have been useful to bring consciousness to people and if lucky remove some of the willpower fatigue that is more and more present in the younger generation.
Why not?
Was a little bit too simple and there better tool that dont make you suffer to get the same result.
Inspiration?
Mainly Iron Man movies, I wanted to build a suit able to make humans survive into the harsh environment of Iceland. An autonomous human enhanced by technologies that could live without any house. When your body becomes your home, inspired by homeless people living in cities all around the world through all of different weather experiences.
Why?
The goal was to produce a human not limited by his capabilities to survive, like the sheep we saw outside during summer, a human able to be seen all over Iceland and other parts of the world, being able to get heat but also cold from the ground using his surrounding elements. Also it could have been used to generate electricity to be used at different extent. Another interesting point will have been to actually feel the earth that is beneath you.
Why not?
The complexity of the project and my lack of knowledge on the different elements I needed to know and understand. After some research I also realized that there was not really any affordable enough technologies to make it possible, since I wanted to make it work for real.
